You are unable to sleep when it strikes-that tingling,jittery sensation in your legs that means you cant keep them still.This is restless legs syndrome(RLS) and its really a common complaint heard during pregnancy.Because,its usually worse when you are sitting or lying down at the end of the day.
Anyone at any age can have this syndrome although pregnancy seems to be a particular trigger.It can occur at any stage during pregnancy whether it is first or last trimester and remains until the baby is born.These symptoms are harmless and wont affect your pregnancy or your baby.They usually disappears after birth.
Increase your IRON Intake: I had iron deficiency during and after pregnancy so I continued taking tablets even after my pregnancy.Have food rich in Iron.I follow a vegetarian diet and so if you are a vegetarian then try to include spinach,beetroot and different kind of daals in your diet.You can have a spinach banana smoothie.
Reduce Caffeine:You should reduce or try to cut out caffeine.Most decaffeinated coffee contains some caffeine,as does most tea,including green tea whether it is organic or not.So have caffeine free herbal teas.And be aware that you will find caffeine in some fizzy drinks and chocolates.
Apply HEAT or COLD:Bathing or taking long shower can help calm your legs.try experimenting with water temperatures to see what what works for you and offers more relief.Gentle warmth from heated pad helps some mom to be and it helped me a lot.
Exercise your leg muscles:Kicking or moving your legs will bring some kind of relief.Try this simple exercise friends,you will have immediate relief.Contract all your muscles surrounding your restless area for10 seconds,then relax for 20 seconds.Repeat five times while breathing slowly.
Distract your brain: Try keeping busy with activities you love may be listening to music ,or doing some yoga or meditation.
Soothe with massage:A good massage can offer temporary relief from symptoms.Ask your hubby to massage your legs at bedtime,as you drift off,to quell the tingling long enough for you to fall asleep.
